The Discovery That’s Making Headlines

In December 2023, NASA’s automated telescope in Chile spotted something unusual: a massive asteroid hurtling through space. Dubbed 2024 YR4, this space rock quickly climbed to the top of the impact risk list maintained by both US and European space agencies.

At first, experts estimated a 1.3% chance of it colliding with Earth in 2032. But recently, those odds have been revised—and not in our favor.

The Numbers Are Rising

According to Juan L Cano from the European Space Agency’s Planetary Defence Office, the probability of impact has now jumped to 2.
