The rugby world received a jolt this week as All Blacks captain Sam Cane announced his retirement from international rugby, effective at the end of 2024. This decision marks the end of a 12-year career, studded with triumphs like the 2015 World Cup victory, but also marked by intense pressure and scrutiny.

Family First: Cane Chooses Long-Term Security in Japan

At 32, Cane has decided to prioritize family, signing a lucrative long-term contract with Suntory Goliath in Tokyo.

The allure of a stable future for his young family proved too strong to resist. "I had to weigh up everything and, in the end, with a young family, it seemed like the best decision to help set up our future," Cane confessed, the weight of responsibility evident in his voice.  However, the decision was clearly a difficult one. "It was a very hard one because I love the teams that I represent here in New Zealand," he added, his voice thick with emotion.

A Career of Highs and Lows: From World Cup Glory to Captaincy Challenges

Cane's journey has been a rollercoaster. He reached the pinnacle of rugby success, winning the World Cup with New Zealand in 2015, and tasting Super Rugby glory twice with the Waikato Chiefs. However, his captaincy, inherited from the legendary Kieran Read in 2020, has been fraught with challenges.  He battled inconsistent form and faced harsh criticism, culminating in a red card during the 2023 World Cup final loss against South Africa.
