On Friday, Aug. 21, Matt Rahmani exchanged the kind of playful messages with his wife, Allison “Ally” Rahmani, that had defined their marriage. For months, Ally had encouraged Matt to attend weekday prayers at their synagogue, believing his example would influence their oldest son.

Before entering the synagogue, Matt sent Ally a photograph of the tallit bag she had spent a year and a half making for him. The bag held his tallit, or prayer shawl, and represented both her devotion and the spiritual encouragement she had consistently offered him.
