At 43 years old, Bubbles lives at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida—a sanctuary that houses primates retired from entertainment and the exotic pet trade.
He arrived there in 2005 after Jackson could no longer care for him, and in the nearly two decades since, Bubbles has built what sanctuary staff describe as a genuinely rich social life. He has a close bond with other chimps at the facility, enjoys painting (his artwork has sold at charity auctions), and according to caretakers, has developed a personality that's equal parts stubborn and affectionate.
