He was a Shannon man first, and a Munster man always, and it was in the red of Munster that he found himself part of one of the most famous afternoons in Irish rugby history.

On an October day in 1978, at Thomond Park, Munster beat the All Blacks 12 to 0. Not a near-thing, not a moral victory dressed up as a real one — an actual, complete, scoreboard-confirmed beating of New Zealand, the only such result any Irish provincial side managed against the men in black that century.
