The story always sounds like something from a cruel breakup scene in a TV drama. In 2007, while Kate Middleton was at work at the fashion brand Jigsaw, she reportedly stepped out of a meeting to take a call from Prince William. On that call, according to royal biographer Robert Jobson and historian Robert Lacey, William told Kate they were on “different pages” and needed space – effectively ending the relationship over the phone.
Kate was said to be “hurt and devastated”, but she didn’t melt down in public. She went on holiday with her mother and a friend, kept her game face on for the cameras, and let the world speculate.
