The theremin, widely regarded as one of the hardest instruments to master, appears in season four's "The Bus Pants Utilization," when Sheldon, kicked off his friends' app development team, retreats to the hallway and plays it as loudly as possible as revenge, eventually performing a mournful rendition of "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen.
That was genuinely Jim Parsons playing every note. He admitted at a Paleyfest interview, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, that his struggles with the instrument brought him to actual tears. "He said that his inabilities brought him to tears," the outlet noted, but he persisted regardless.
