This photo was taken in 1944 by William Eugene Smith, one of America's leading photojournalism photographers. During World War II, the war became more intense as it drew to a close.
In this photograph, two American soldiers are clearing a battlefield. In the weeds, they found a naked, dying baby. One of the soldiers, immediately went to pick up the baby, while the other watched the scene, but could not keep his gun in his hand.
