Downton Abbey Is Returning to PBS — But the Real Reason It Still Works Is Not Just Nostalgia

Some shows come back as reruns. Downton Abbey comes back like a house reopening its doors.

When Downton Abbey returns to PBS on Sunday nights beginning May 17, it will not feel like an ordinary repeat.

PBS is bringing the series back from the beginning, with Seasons 1–3 airing in 2026 and Seasons 4–6 continuing in 2027. For many viewers, that means returning to the Crawleys, the servants, the staircase, the dining room, and all those quiet rituals that made the show feel less like a drama and more like a place they once knew.
