One of the reasons The Big Bang Theory lasted far beyond its original run is that it did more than turn geek culture into mainstream entertainment. It also convinced viewers that the science mattered.
For a sitcom, that was a surprisingly big achievement. Plenty of shows use equations, jargon, and lab settings as background texture. The Big Bang Theory went further. It made science part of the atmosphere, part of the comedy, and part of the characters’ identity.
