When first entered development at The CW in 2008, no one yet knew it would become one of the network’s most defining series. Before the iconic fandom, the conventions, and the global supernatural craze it sparked, there was simply a script, a vision from creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, and a group of young actors stepping into roles that would change their careers.
The early days of casting were far from straightforward. Nina Dobrev was not the immediate favorite for Elena Gilbert — rumor has it her first audition didn’t impress the production team. But after submitting a second taped audition, Nina finally convinced the creators she could carry the emotional complexity the role required.
