1. It trains the largest muscle in the upper body. The latissimus dorsi — the broad muscle that creates the V-taper appearance from behind — is the primary mover in the pull-up. No other exercise trains the lats through a full range of vertical pulling motion with the same effectiveness at bodyweight.
2. It simultaneously develops the biceps, rear deltoids, and core. A properly performed pull-up requires coordinated activation of the lats, biceps, brachialis, rear delts, rhomboids, and deep core stabilizers. Few exercises produce this breadth of upper body stimulus in a single movement.
