More than four decades later, the finale of M*A*S*H still stands as one of the most extraordinary moments in television history — and according to Alan Alda, the cast had a sense it would be something special even before the ratings confirmed it.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Alda, now 89, reflected on the unprecedented night when M*A*S*H’s feature-length finale, “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen,” aired in 1983 and drew an estimated 120 million viewers, making it the most-watched episode of broadcast television ever.

Alda, who portrayed the iconic Hawkeye Pierce, recalled realizing just how massive the moment was in real time:
