The Original Pilot Episode of Sherlock Still Exists. The Differences From What Aired Will Unsettle You.
Before — the episode that introduced Sherlock to the world — there was a different version of that story. The original pilot, running to approximately sixty minutes, was filmed in 2009, screened for the BBC, and shelved.

The BBC's feedback was not that the concept was wrong. It was that the episode moved too slowly and that the visual language hadn't found itself yet. The show was recommissioned as a ninety-minute format and the pilot was reshot substantially — same story, different cut, different pacing, several different scenes.
