There is a test that separates the characters who survive their stories from the characters who belong to them.

The test is simple: can you think about the character outside the plot? Can you wonder what they are doing on a Tuesday afternoon that no episode covers? Do they exist, in your imagination, in the spaces between scenes — do they have an interior life that the story gestures toward without containing?

Most characters fail this test. They exist in the scenes they are given and nowhere else. They are plot-functional. They do what the story requires. When the story ends, they end.

A small number of characters pass. They are the ones who get sequels and adaptations and fan fiction and academic study and the specific kind of continued conversation that belongs to things that feel more real than their fictional status should allow.
