In a show packed with brutal moments, few scenes in feel as shocking – or as “unreasonable” – as the moment Gus Fring kills Victor in the season 4 premiere, “Box Cutter.” You expect Gus to shoot someone. You expect him to kill Walt or Jesse. Instead, he calmly changes into a hazmat suit, picks up a simple box cutter, and silently slits Victor’s throat in front of everyone, then just says: “Well? Get back to work.

On first watch, it almost feels irrational. Victor has been a loyal henchman for seasons. Jesse is the one who just murdered Gus’s prized chemist, Gale. Shouldn’t the punishment fall on the kid who pulled the trigger? Even series creator Vince Gilligan has admitted that the scene is so realistic and disturbing that it made him feel faint when he watched the cut in the edit bay.
