You've seen the show. You know the characters. But there's one casting decision from Series 1 that almost went a completely different direction — and the actor who nearly got Watson's role has spoken about it publicly only once.

The Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into 60 languages. Only one translation caused an international incident. And the reason why tells you something surprising about what different cultures saw in the character.

Benedict Cumberbatch was in the middle of a press interview when someone showed him a piece of Sherlock fan art for the first time. His reaction lasted about four seconds. Those four seconds told you everything about how he actually feels about the people who love the show.

There is a piece of music in Sherlock that plays in only one scene. It has no official title. It was never released on the soundtrack album. But it has been searched for online more than any other piece of music from the show — because people hear it once and cannot forget it.

Sherlock Holmes has been played by over 70 actors. Only one of them has ever been asked to play both Holmes and his brother. What Benedict Cumberbatch said when someone suggested it — and why the answer reveals everything about how he understands both characters.

A researcher at a UK university spent three years studying how Sherlock fans talk about mental health online. What she found changed how she understood both the show and the people who love it.

There's a YouTube channel that has been uploading Sherlock scene analyses for eleven years. The person running it has never shown their face or revealed their name. Their most-viewed video has 4.2 million views. And their analysis of one specific scene changed how a significant portion of the fandom understands the show.

The BBC has released a lot of Sherlock behind-the-scenes content over the years. One short clip — uploaded in 2014, running just under three minutes — has more emotional impact than most full episodes of television. It shows something that was never supposed to be part of the show.
