On September 3, 1989, passengers aboard a Brazilian Boeing 737 expected the final leg of an ordinary domestic flight to last 48 minutes. Instead, they spent more than three hours flying through the dark over the Amazon, searching for a city that was more than 600 miles away.

By the time the crew admitted that the aircraft had run out of fuel, it was too late to reach an airport. Flight 254 would have to attempt an emergency landing in the rainforest.
What made the disaster so unsettling was that the airplane had not been brought down by a storm, a mechanical failure, or a single dramatic act of sabotage.
