Some tragedies don’t arrive out of nowhere — they’ve been in the air from the beginning

What made Alex’s final stretch in 1923 so devastating wasn’t simply that Taylor Sheridan kept making her suffer. It was that, by the time she reached Ellis Island and then finally made it to Spencer, her story already felt marked by fate.

That feeling wasn’t just something viewers projected onto the character after the fact. Julia Schlaepfer has said she sensed it from the very start. Before filming Season 1, she sat beside Sheridan at dinner and asked him directly whether Alex was going to die, because she had “always had a feeling” that was where the character was headed.
