She simply realized something one afternoon — and after that, a small choice didn’t feel small anymore.

I turned fifty-six last spring.
It wasn’t a big birthday. No party. No trip. Just dinner at home and a few phone calls. I remember standing in the kitchen after everyone left, washing dishes, and thinking something that surprised me.
