There is a version of this story that sounds like a joke setup. It is not a joke. It happened.

Sometime in the late 1970s, at the height of her fame, Dolly Parton entered a Dolly Parton lookalike contest at a venue in California.

She did not win. She did not come in second. By most accounts she finished somewhere in the middle of the pack, behind several drag queens who had studied her look with considerably more commitment than she had brought to the exercise that evening.
