It’s almost unthinkable that CBS never revived MASH*, one of the most acclaimed shows in TV history. Yet in 2003, the network quietly came closer than ever before. The project even had a name — MASHback — and the blessing of the show’s legendary creator, Larry Gelbart.

For eleven seasons, MASH* defined television, blending dark comedy with heartbreak and social commentary. When it ended in 1983, CBS wasn’t ready to let go; the network quickly launched spinoffs like AfterMASH and WALTER*, both of which flopped.
