After the fall of Wall Street on 29 October 1929, the United States was plunged into the Great Depression, which lasted more than a decade.

Families from rural to urban areas were plunged into extreme poverty during this period. Many American children were unable to study at this time and became child labourers. Pictured here is an American family after the 1932-33 famine in rural America, where the children were starved to death.
