West Coast Swing does something to the human brain that most physical activities do not.
The research on partner dance and neurological function has expanded significantly in the past two decades, driven partly by studies on tango in older adult populations and partly by the broader scientific interest in activities that combine physical movement, social interaction, musical processing, and real-time decision-making simultaneously.
What WCS specifically does — and what distinguishes it from most other partner dances in a neurological sense — is the combination of improvisation and physical connection. The brain areas activated during improvised partner dance are not the same areas activated during choreographed performance.
