In Canada, scientists are using smart new technology to protect some of the ocean’s most vulnerable giants — endangered whales. The secret? Special “smart buoys” floating in the water, equipped with underwater microphones called hydrophones. These devices can pick up whale calls from miles away.
When a whale’s call is detected, the buoy’s system analyzes the sound to figure out which species it is and exactly where it’s coming from. Within moments, an alert is sent to nearby ships.
