There is a moment in late spring — brief, specific, and genuinely difficult to describe to someone who hasn't experienced it — when a tree peony opens its first flower of the season.
The flower is enormous: dinner-plate sized in some varieties, with petals of a substance and texture closer to silk than to anything the word "petal" usually implies. The colors range from pure white through blush, pink, coral, and red to deep, almost black maroon — sometimes several of these within a single flower, in gradations that no other garden plant replicates.
