If I Could Only Give One Piece of Gardening Advice, This Would Be It
I have been asked this question in different forms many times — by people who are starting their first garden, by people who have gardened for years and feel they're missing something, by people who garden successfully but want to understand why.
What is the single most important thing?
I've given different answers at different times. Good soil. Right plant, right place. Consistent observation. All of these are true. All of them matter enormously. But when I try to identify the thing that, if a gardener truly understood it, would make everything else more likely to fall into place — there is one answer I keep returning to.
