The Most Generous Plant in My Garden — And Why I Give It Away Every Single Year
There are plants that reward you proportionally to the effort and attention you invest. And then there is lemon balm — a plant that rewards you regardless, that seems to thrive on neglect as readily as on care, that produces more than any single household can use, and that has been quietly one of the most useful plants in my garden for years.
Lemon balm belongs to the mint family, which partly explains its vigorous, generous nature. Like mint, it spreads enthusiastically given the opportunity — which means growing it in a container is sensible in a small garden. Unlike mint, it doesn't spread by underground runners, which makes it considerably more manageable in open ground.
