She wrote about the first time she didn’t say “whatever is easiest.”
The following is her story. Lightly edited, shared with permission.
For most of my life, I’ve said the same thing in salons.
“Whatever you think is best.”
“Nothing too short.”
“I’m easy.”
I used to think that meant I was low-maintenance.
Easygoing.
Not demanding.
Now I realize it mostly meant I didn’t trust my own opinion enough to take up space.
I’m in my late fifties.
