What makes MRU extraordinary is the scale and ambition behind it. Between the rivers Oder and Warta, the original designers wanted not just scattered pillboxes, but a hidden fortress metropolis. In the central section near Międzyrzecz and Pniewo, a network of tunnels — some 32 km long and reaching depths up to 40 m — linked dozens of concrete forts, bunkers, barracks, workshops, storage areas, and transit shafts.
Inside there were railway tracks, ammunition warehouses, power rooms, troop quarters — enough to house tens of thousands. It was less a defensive line and more a self-contained underground city designed for war.
