There are artists who are associated with a culture. Then there are artists who are embedded in it — whose music doesn't just play at events but is part of the fabric of what those events feel like, why people show up, what they're connecting to when they do.
Lil Rob is the second kind.
Born in San Diego in 1975, Roberto Flores started recording under the Lil Rob name in the early 1990s. His music combined West Coast rap structure with the melodic sensibility of oldies — the same oldies that had been playing from car windows on Lowrider cruise nights since the 1960s.
