In January 1977, three students at San Jose State University — Larry Gonzalez, Sonny Madrid, and David Nunez — published the first issue of Lowrider Magazine. They were trying to give the Chicano community of the Bay Area a voice in car culture media. They built something that lasted decades and shaped a global cultural movement.
The magazine's early issues were photocopied, stapled, and distributed by hand. The publishing infrastructure that later made it a national presence didn't exist yet. What existed was an audience that had never seen their cars, their clubs, and their culture reflected in any mainstream publication, and a hunger for that reflection that turned a local publishing project into a national subscription base with extraordinary speed.
