It’s been nearly a decade since the fourth and final season of aired, but fandom hopes have never truly dimmed. Still, as of mid-2025 the reality remains sobering: the show’s creators and cast have repeatedly signaled that no new season is forthcoming.
In July 2025, co-creator Mark Gatiss publicly dismissed the possibility of reviving with its original stars. As he put it: Meanwhile, lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch has said that for him to return, any new season would need to "be better than it ever was" — setting a very high bar for revival.
