HBO in 2002 was the most creatively permissive network in television. The Sopranos had already established that the premium cable model could sustain difficult, uncommercial storytelling.

Simon walked into that environment and still managed to ignore the one consistent note he received across the entire production.

Make someone rootable.

Not a hero — HBO wasn't asking for that. Just a gravitational center. A character the audience could follow as a guide through the complexity.
