Detective Miriam Okeke closed 47 cold cases across a 30-year career. She was methodical, patient, and possessed of the particular stubbornness that cold case work demands — the willingness to sit with a question for years until it answers itself. In March 2023, she disappeared for nine days. When she came back, she had solved it. She has not yet explained how.

Sealed spaces go stale. It is the basic chemistry of a closed system — oxygen depletes, carbon dioxide accumulates, the atmosphere deteriorates over time into something that cannot sustain life. A space sealed for 10,000 years should contain air that would kill you. The cave system beneath the Dinaric Alps that a team of explorers unsealed in September 2022 contained something else entirely.

Which is why what he found independently in Morocco, in Brazil, and in a paper submitted by a colleague in Vietnam has been keeping him awake since 2021.

The neurological ward at 3 AM is a specific kind of quiet. Machines, the occasional call, the particular sound of a building full of people between states of consciousness. Nurse Rachel Addo has worked that ward for eleven years. She has seen patients in many unusual states. She has never filed a report like the one she filed on the morning of October 22nd, 2022.

Weather is the atmosphere's autobiography — variable, responsive, shaped by everything around it. The station designated AW-14 on the northwestern coast of Svalbard has recorded temperature data continuously since 1983. What that data shows has been noted by three successive teams of researchers, mentioned in two internal reports, and not yet published anywhere. The temperature never changes.

Mortality is the one thing demographers can rely on. Birth rates fluctuate, migration patterns shift, populations grow and decline in complicated ways. But people die. Everywhere, at all times, people die. The town of Harwick, population 847, in rural Vermont, has not recorded a single death since 1993. Reporter Claire Osei drove there to write about it. She filed one dispatch. She has not explained why she didn't file the rest.
