Winter gives most gardeners permission to stop. The growing season is over, the beds are empty, the tools are put away, and the garden is left to sit under grey skies until the first hints of warmth in late February prompt a return to action.
This is completely understandable. It's also a significant missed opportunity.
The gardeners with the most consistently beautiful, productive, and well-structured outdoor spaces don't stop thinking about their gardens in winter. They use this quieter season strategically — for planning, preparing, and doing a set of specific tasks that most beginners don't know exist, but which make an enormous difference to what happens in spring and throughout the following growing season.
