It lasted barely two seconds. In the BBC Christmas special A Berry Royal Christmas, filmed with baking legend Mary Berry, Prince William gently reached across and placed his hand on Kate’s shoulder. Kate, still smiling for the cameras, subtly rolled her shoulder forward and shook his hand off.
Clipped, slowed down, zoomed in and replayed on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, the gesture became “the shoulder shrug seen around the world”. Royal-watchers froze the frame, circled Kate’s shoulder in red, and asked the same question:
