BMI is calculated by dividing body weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. It produces a single number that assigns a person to underweight, normal, overweight, or obese categories. The problem is immediately obvious: this formula has no mechanism to distinguish between muscle tissue and fat tissue.
For the general sedentary population with average muscle mass, BMI correlates well enough with body fat percentage to serve as a rough screening tool.
