The traditional rationale for 8–12 reps was rooted in the concept of time under tension and metabolic stress. Sets in this range take approximately 30–60 seconds to complete, keeping muscle fibers under load long enough to produce meaningful metabolic byproducts and mechanical tension — both recognized mechanisms of hypertrophy.
This rationale held up well until more rigorous research began directly comparing hypertrophy outcomes across very different rep ranges. A landmark 2017 study by Schoenfeld and colleagues compared sets of 8–12 reps at moderate loads to sets of 25–35 reps at lighter loads, equating total volume between groups.
