In the original Sherlock Holmes stories, Mrs. Hudson is primarily furniture — a landlady who opens doors, brings tea, and occasionally receives instructions from Holmes that she then ignores.
The writers of BBC's Sherlock made the same initial assumptions. Her scenes in the early scripts were brief. Her function was transitional.
Una Stubbs had other ideas.
Stubbs, who came to the role with decades of experience across British theatre and television, made a specific choice that changed how the character functioned within the ensemble: she played Mrs.
