The pigeon is, among city birds, the one most consistently underestimated. It is the bird people walk around, the one dismissed as ordinary, the one that has become so woven into the urban background that most people have stopped seeing it at all.
This turns out to be a significant underestimation.
In a study published in PLOS ONE, researchers at the University of California Davis trained pigeons to distinguish between benign and malignant breast tissue samples in medical imaging scans.
