The capybara is the world's largest rodent — a South American animal that resembles, depending on who you ask, a very large guinea pig, a small cow, or something that has decided to be entirely at peace with its place in the world and would like everyone around it to feel the same way.
That last description is, it turns out, biologically significant.
Across documented observations in both wild and captive settings, capybaras exhibit an interspecies social behavior that researchers have struggled to find parallels for: they are accepted as neutral — frequently as welcome — presences by an unusually wide range of other species.
