Cows Have Best Friends. When Separated From Them, They Experience Measurable Distress. Here's What the Research Actually Shows.
Of all the animals whose inner lives have been systematically underestimated, the cow may hold the record. Cows are among the most familiar large animals on earth — present in the landscape of human civilization for ten thousand years — and among the least studied for cognitive and social complexity until very recently.
The friendship research began, as much good science does, almost by accident. Researchers at the University of Northampton studying stress indicators in dairy cattle noticed that individual cows showed lower cortisol levels — the primary biological marker of stress — when housed with specific other cows rather than with random herd members.
