Not a command. Not a request. Something you actually mean. I've been sitting with this question for a few days and I can't get it out of my head — and I don't think I'm alone in that.

I've thought about what I'd say to my dog.
I think I'd tell him that the vet doesn't mean him any harm. That the car ride to get there, which he approaches with such focused dread, ends somewhere safe. That the people in the white coats are the reason he's still here after that difficult winter two years ago, and that I would take him back a hundred times if I had to, because he is worth every anxious car ride we've ever shared.
