Most gym-goers focus on training and protein — but often ignore the most important recovery tool available: sleep. Recent science makes a chilling warning: if you don’t get enough quality sleep, you could actually be losing muscle mass, even if you’re eating well and training hard.
A 2021 study found that just one night of total sleep deprivation reduced muscle protein synthesis by about 18%, while simultaneously raising stress hormone (cortisol) and lowering anabolic hormones such as testosterone — creating a catabolic environment.
