Making applesauce at home is easy and can be preserved by canning. Separation at the bottom of the jar is normal and doesn't mean it's spoiled. Too much liquid or using watery apples can cause separation. To minimize separation, use apple varieties with less juice like Rome Beauty and add just enough liquid while cooking. A microwave can be used to cook the apples without extra juice. If the apples are peeled, use a food mill, otherwise, stir them into a thick sauce. Add flavoring and sugar before canning or enjoying.
